Why Teeth Cleaning and Removing Calcium Deposits Are Super Important!

Hi there! 👋

I’m Dr. Sergey Zemlyansky from Harborside Dental at 127 Easter Ave, Gloucester, MA 01930, and I want to talk to you about something really important for your teeth – cleaning them! You might already know that brushing and flossing your teeth is important, but did you know that there are some things your toothbrush can’t always clean? Let’s dive in!

What Are Calcium Deposits?

Have you ever noticed white spots or bumps on your teeth? Those are called calcium deposits, also known as tartar or plaque. It happens when the food and drinks you eat (especially sugary or starchy ones) mix with the bacteria in your mouth. This creates a sticky film on your teeth called plaque. If plaque isn’t cleaned off, it hardens and turns into tartar or calcium deposits, which are much harder to get rid of.

Why Is Teeth Cleaning Important?

  1. Keeps Your Teeth Healthy 🦷 Cleaning your teeth properly helps prevent cavities (those little holes in your teeth) and gum disease. If plaque and tartar are left on your teeth, they can cause these problems. Think of it like if you leave food on your plate for too long — it’ll get all sticky and gross! Your teeth are the same way.

  2. Keeps Your Gums Healthy 😁 When tartar builds up along your gums, it can make your gums red, swollen, and bleed when you brush or floss. This is called gum disease, and if it gets worse, it can cause your teeth to become loose. Cleaning your teeth regularly helps avoid all that and keeps your gums happy!

  3. Freshens Your Breath 🌬️ We all love having fresh breath! When plaque and tartar build up, it can make your breath smell not-so-nice. Regular teeth cleaning helps you smell good and feel confident when talking to friends or family!

  4. Prevents Staining 🖤 Plaque and tartar can also cause staining on your teeth. It’s like when a chalkboard gets dirty if you don’t wipe it down. Regular cleaning helps keep your teeth looking nice and bright!

What Happens During a Teeth Cleaning?

When you come to our dental office for a teeth cleaning, we use special tools to remove plaque and tartar that’s stuck on your teeth. These tools help clean areas where your toothbrush can’t reach, like between your teeth and along the gum line. The cleaning is quick, and it feels great afterward because your teeth will feel smooth and super clean!

So, How Often Should You Clean Your Teeth?

I recommend visiting the dentist for a cleaning every 6 months. That’s because plaque and tartar can build up even if you brush your teeth twice a day. It’s just like how we need to clean our room regularly — it’s not something we can skip if we want to keep everything nice and tidy!

Take Care of Your Teeth at Home Too!

While visiting the dentist is super important, you can also do your part at home by brushing your teeth twice a day and flossing once a day. This helps keep plaque from building up in the first place!

Remember: Clean teeth make you smile brighter, feel better, and stay healthier! 🦷😁
